Our first week ended with a 65 mile ride into St Louis. We were on parts of old Route 66 and various bike paths and rail trails. At one point, we left the trails and proceeded under a freeway overpass and saw a car on fire! Yes, a car fully ablaze on fire! We watched as the traffic came to a complete standstill, the fire department arrived and put the vehicle out. We hope the people got out.
We proceeded on and crossed the Mississippi on an old bridge, with a 22 deg bend in it, though some references identify the bend as 30 deg. I have no protractor so I cannot confirm the actual angle-wink. The bridge is pedestrian and bicycle traffic only, which made for a relaxed crossing, Before we knew it, we spied the St Louis Arch in the distance and then we were under it. It is a magnificent structure, 630 feet to the top, a catenary curve, completed in 1968. Well worth the trip to the top, scary for me with my fear of heights, but still worth it.

Some Craziness from the Road
I was preparing for bed last night and proceeding to plug in all my electronics that need charging. I have all the chargers, cradles and cables and a power strip in a black mesh bag that I keep in my daypack. I pulled out the black mesh bag and the power strip and chargers and plugged in the three lights on my bike: helmet, front and rear. Next, I plugged in my garmin bike computer, my phone and lap top. I went to plug in the two batteries for my electronic shifting and OH NO!, I don’t have the charing cradles, the UBS cables nor the adaptor plug for my electronic shifting batteries. OH NO, OH NO, OH NO. Without batteries my bicycle will not shift. I will be in ONE gear only. Ut Oh. I keep looking in the black mesh bag and there is nothing more in it. I don’t have the charging cradles. Ugh. I must have left it at the previous hotel.
Think, think, think. What are my options. I have 5 total batteries, 3 fully charged, 2 I have just traveled 65 miles on. A set of batteries should last 15 – 20 hours. OK, I’ve got enough battery power to last me several days. Let’s see the next day is 40 miles, followed by 70, followed by 65. What will be my speed, how long will it take? This is an algebra problem right? Don’t panic. OK, I’ll go on-line find the charging cradle and have it over night air sent to the hotel 2 days away. Shoot, tomorrow is Sunday, no shipping until Monday. I’ll have the cradle sent to the hotel 3 days away. I should have enough battery power to get three days down the road. It will cost me a fortune in shipping, but the other option is my bike doesn’t shift and I can’t ride! Ugh.
As an aside, do you remember, I had issues with my electronic shifting motors on the last epic cross country? Oh, No. Here I am again. Focus on solutions, focus on solutions.
I find two different vendors who have the cradle and will do overnight air. I order one cradle from each–so I have a back up. I check and double check the address for the hotel so the on-line form is correct. I call the previous hotel to ask if they found the charging cradle I had left in the room–nope, they don’t have it. I send an email to each vendor to follow up to make sure the air shipment happens on Monday. Zach, from vendor 1, emails me back–on Sunday– and we chat on the phone. He will make sure my cradle is shipped out on Monday. Yeah Zach. I got this covered, but I’m still unsettled as I have potentially 3 days of riding with my 5 batteries. I try to put it out of my mind. I’ve done the best I can. Acceptance is the key in any situation. The universe has this. What will happen will happen.
I get ready for bed, tonight, and pull out my night clothes, which I store in a black mesh bag. Yup, the charging cradles are in with my night clothes. Problem solved as I shake my head.
