We started riding today at 630a, as it was predicted to be in the mid 90s, but with relatively no humidity. We had some washed to roads and wound up riding most of our 60 miles on Interstate I40. I like it, but, alas, had another flat and got a gash in my front tire.… Continue reading 1159 Miles to Go, Early Start to Beat the Heat in NM
Today had a lot going for it: 80 miles, the half way point, left Texas (!) and entered New Mexico. The terrain changed from endless fields and chip sealed roads, to wide open views and smooth road surface. In addition, we had nearly 20 miles on the Interstate, I40. I know this sounds terrible, but… Continue reading 1227 Miles to Go, Half Way and New Mexico
Relive ‘Morning May 23rd’ Just another day in the saddle cycling across the Texas panhandle. Tomorrow we hit the halfway point, then on to New Mexico.
We’re in Texas! Yeah. And, immediately the road changed to chip seal. Yuk. It’s a cheap way to pave rural roads. Today it felt like we finally got to The West. We’re still in Oklahoma for one more day, but we are the western portion of the state–but not the little handle piece. We’ve covered just over 1000 miles, but not yet half way. When I get on my bike in the morning, my body loves… Continue reading 1495 Miles to Go, Almost through Oklahoma
Had a relatively cool day of only 50 miles. After several 70 and 80 miles days, it felt down right leisurely. It was lovely. We stopped in our first little town, Chandler. Chandler is one of the many cities along Route 66 which contains a number of attractions for devotees of “The Mother Road.” These include… Continue reading 1585 Miles To Go, Middle of Oklahoma
Crossing more of Oklahoma. Nearly 900 miles done. Long but enjoyable 80 mile day, with NO headwinds! Significant cloud cover, which made things much cooler. Today’s highlights were a large blue whale, Tulsa and two flats. The Blue Whale of Catoosa is one of the iconic attractions along Route 66–so they say. This guy built the… Continue reading 1635 Miles to go, a two flat day
